Quick Review

I’ve been a Semrush user for a while now.

What has made me stick around for so long is its ease of use and versatility. I can use it to do a full content audit for my website and to work on my link-building strategy.

The application is vast, and there is a lot in it to explore.

That gives it a slightly longer learning curve.

But if you are serious about SEO, PPC, and content marketing, the time you’ll spend in understanding the tool will be worth it.

Detailed Semrush Review: An In-Depth Look at the Key Features

When it comes to SEO, Semrush is one of the most popular tools out there.

I’ve been a Semrush user myself.

Based on my personal experience, I want to give you an honest review of Semrush’s offering.

Pros and cons — both sides covered!

I’ll divide this detailed Semrush review section into multiple sub-sections.

Each subsection in the review will cover a different toolkit that Semrush offers.

But before I begin, I want to put out a short disclaimer:

As a platform, Semrush has very rich functionality. It may not be in the scope of this review post to cover all of them in detail.

But I’ll try to cover all the main Semrush features at least.

At the end of each review section, I’ll also add a quick verdict. If you are short on time, you can head to that section right away.

Ready to go?

(Psst…check out Semrush yourself with this link now).

The First Look

When you go to the Semrush website, you’ll see a big search bar in the center of the screen.

Check it out here:

The First Look

To get started, all you need to do is enter any domain, URL, or keyword in the given space. On the right, there is also an option to choose the country.

For instance, I want to check out if “influencer marketing” is a popular keyword in France.

Here are the results that I got on Semrush:

popular keyword in France.

This was super quick and required no extra skill or knowledge.

If you want a quick trial of Semrush, this is the option you should opt for. Honestly, it’s not a bad option for those just getting started with SEO.

It’s a great way to test the waters before you take the final dip!

Semrush SEO and Market Research Toolkit Review

The SEO and Market Research toolkits are the highlights of Semrush's suite of tools.

But what do they offer?

Here are the key areas that the Semrush SEO and Market Research toolkits can help you with:

  • Keyword Research
  • On-Page SEO
  • Local SEO
  • Rank Tracking
  • Link Building
  • Competitor SEO Analysis

For each of these areas, Semrush offers niche tools. For this review, we’ll take a quick overview of each one of them.

Get Started with Semrush Now

Keyword Research

Semrush offers six main tools for keyword analysis and research.

The first one on the list is the Keyword Overview tool.

(Ready to give it a whirl? Give it a try yourself with this free trial link!)

It gives you a quick idea of how valuable a specific keyword is. From keyword difficulty to top-ranking pages, CPC, volume, and more, you can check it all there.

In a nutshell, it’s an easy way to evaluate the prospects of a particular keyword.

At a quick glance, it can also tell you about how a particular keyword is affecting your overall site traffic.

Keyword Overview tool

As you can see, the tool gives you detailed information, including keyword difficulty, related keywords, global volume, trends, and more.

You can research for your keyword based on different countries and devices.

They even have a section on “Questions.”

I find it very useful, especially for planning content that addresses the user intent. In fact, I use this data to write the FAQ section in many of my blog posts.

Similarly, the information on keyword variations has helped me create optimized content.

Another feature that stands out to me is the option to check out the ad copies for your target keyword.

While still using the tool, you get to see how your competitors use the keywords for paid campaigns.

Not just that.

You also get a quick look at how your ads will appear.

The next tool in Semrush’s keyword research toolkit is “Organic Research.”

In layman terms, this tool lends you a set of binoculars to get a sneak peek into your competitors’ strategy or conduct competitor research.

Now, here’s the technical version:

On a single dashboard, you get to explore organic competitors, top-traffic driving keywords, analyze site rankings for the top 100 results on Google, and more.

Organic Research

You can check out the most usable keywords for any particular domain and get a sense of how a domain’s rankings have changed over time.

Is that all?

Of course not.

Here are the other ways you can use the organic research functionality on Semrush:

  • Check your competitor’s best-performing keywords.
  • Discover new organic competitors.
  • Analyze all the pages of a domain featured in Google’s top 100.
  • Find a domain’s strongest sub-domains.
  • Check the total number of organic keywords that a domain has positions for.
  • Estimate site traffic based on organic search positions.

If I were to discuss all of them in detail, it would take up another whole page.

You can check out this feature yourself with this free-trial link.

We’ve got a lot more to cover, so let’s move on.

Next up on the list is the Semrush Keyword Magic Tool.

From Semrush’s huge keyword database, this tool picks out the best keyword suggestions for you.

All you need to do is enter the main keyword and choose the country.

Based on that, you will get some related keyword suggestions that are grouped by clusters. They are also provided with filters that will help you find some long-tail keywords.

You can also check the volume, CPC, and other details for each suggestion.

Keyword Magic Tool

The best part?

The tool stores your search history and lets you sort your queries by date.

All in all, the tool gives you a detailed report that contains the following metrics:

  • Search volume
  • Trend
  • Keyword difficulty
  • Competitive density
  • Cost per click
  • Trend
  • SERP features
  • Click potential
  • Top competitors

Having used this tool multiple times, I can tell you it lets you go heavy on research.

Like, all guns blazing.

Don’t believe me?

Give it a try now!

To organize the chosen keywords, you can also save them in the Keyword Manager or sort them via the Keyword Grouping Tool.

Wondering what the Keyword Manager is?

Think of it as a platform to organize and manage all the keywords you want to track and save.

Using the Keyword Manager, you can analyze up to 1,000 keywords.

Additionally, you can also see changes within the SERP features and top competitors for keywords in real-time.

Sign up for it here

The last tool to discuss in Semrush’s Keyword Research segment is Organic Traffic Insights.

This tool connects to Google Analytics and Google Search Console and analyzes every site page thoroughly.

It gives you a complete list of keywords that your site pages are ranking for. Even the hidden “not provided” keywords are included in this list.

Organic Traffic Insights

To get precise data, you can also select a particular location or device as a filter for your traffic insights report.

However, the biggest benefit of the Organic Traffic Insights report is that it enables you to find which keywords bring you conversions.

In a nutshell, it can tell you what’s driving the overall ROI.

That’s it — we’ve covered all the tools included in the Keyword Research tool.

Quick Verdict:

Semrush is a great platform that fares better than most other SEO tools out there in terms of keyword analysis and research.

While it offers advanced features, it is also very user-friendly. That’s a rare combination right there!

On-Page SEO

When it comes to on-page SEO, Semrush has three main tools like:

  • Site Audit
  • On-Page SEO Checker
  • Log File Analyzer

All three of them are designed to help you assess your website health and get better ideas on boosting your SERP rankings.

Wondering how?

Let’s check out what each of these On-Page SEO tools offers.

Their Site Audit tool is designed to check your website for more than 130 SEO and technical mistakes.

Depending on the severity, all the issues found are divided into three main categories — Notices, warnings, and errors.

It also enables you to run thematic reports.

For the uninitiated, these reports allow you to improve specific areas of your website.

On-Page SEO

You can create such specific reports for the following areas on the Site Audit tool:

  • Site Performance
  • Internal Linking
  • Crawlability
  • International SEO
  • HTTPS
  • AMP Audit
  • Core Web Vitals
  • Structured Data

The best part is you can schedule a weekly technical SEO audit.

That way, you don’t have to remember it.

Once the audit is complete, Semrush automatically sends the progress or review report directly to your inbox.

Next, let’s check out the On-Page SEO Checker.

To boost your SEO strategy, you need to know areas where you need improvement.

That’s what the On-Page SEO checker is for. It tells you what your website’s weaknesses are.

It takes data from multiple different sources. In fact, Semrush also provides integration with Google Search Console, so getting data from there is super easy.

Once you get the data, the tool compares your page to the top 10 organic competitors in real-time for each target keyword that you enter.

It can also help you with ideas for content, backlinks, user experience, strategy, and more.

If you are stuck in a loop and can’t seem to generate new ideas, this tool can do wonders for you.

It gives you the slight push that you need to get the ideas flowing that can help you improve your overall SEO strategy.

Want to try it yourself? Check out this tool for free here.

But how do you use the On-Page SEO Checker?

To get started, you need to enter the address of the landing pages that you want to check.

Next, you can choose a crawler, and even schedule emails with any new ideas that you may have.

That’s not all.

To get a complete list of things you should do to improve your rankings, you can also integrate it with the Site Audit tool and Google Search Console.

Next, let’s talk about Log File Analyzer.

Using it, you can analyze all your logs to get clarity on how web crawlers actually interact with your site.

It can help you with the following SEO areas:

  • Identify navigational and structural issues
  • Optimize your crawl budget
  • Get new ideas to manage bot activity
  • Analyze mobile and desktop activity

It’s a very convenient feature.

Check it out yourself!

Using it, you can save hours that you would otherwise spend on manual analysis.

Here is a sample of what the report looks like:

Log File Analyzer

It’s a useful platform in your SEO arsenal.

If you want to improve your rankings, it’s definitely an essential tool.

Quick Verdict:

The On-Page SEO features from Semrush offer great value!

I give it the thumbs up!

Local SEO

For local SEO, Semrush has four main tools:

  • Listing Management
  • Position Tracking
  • On-Page SEO Checker
  • Social Media Toolkit

Some of them overlap with tools that I’ve already covered in the other sections.

So, I’ll just mention how they are relevant for local SEO in this section.

Let’s get started.

Listing Management is a tool that can help you manage and distribute your business information easily.

You can input all your details once in the Semrush tool and the tool adds it automatically to Yelp, Facebook, Google, Alexa, and other profiles.

Local SEO

That’s not all.

You’re free to upload videos and photos as well.

Try this feature now!

Once that’s done, it becomes easy to edit your listings across platforms at once.

This way, you can maintain consistency without spending a lot of time updating information.

There’s also an option for you to monitor your reputation and stay updated with the latest ratings.

Local SEO 2

The biggest plus point is that it also enables you to manage customer reviews.

In a nutshell, this is the tool you need to manage your online visibility and boost your local rankings.

The next tool in this section is Position Tracking.

This Semrush tool enables you to keep track of the constant fluctuations in your site’s website rankings.

Using it, you can also identify the top-performing landing pages and check how your site performs across locations.

Position Tracking

Wait, there’s a lot more to this tool.

Using it, you can discover opportunities to get featured in Google’s SERP among the Featured Snippet section.

It also allows you to set up projects to check keywords that trigger SERP features with search trends.

To get started with it, register here.

Keywords that trigger SERP

Don’t have the time to delve into so many details?

Check the quick overview of the campaign you’re running straightaway.

I like how it shows all the tool metrics and even enables you to sort them via dates.

What’s more, their Position Tracking Cannibalization Report lets you check any cannibalizing pages your site might have. That means you can easily spot any pages that might be targeting the same keyword or topic and competing for rankings.

Position Tracking Cannibalization

Additionally, it has a new feature that shows the Share of Voice line graph. It lets you measure how well your website is performing on the SERP.

Position Tracking Cannibalization 2

Next, let’s move on to the On-Page SEO Checker.

We’ve already covered this in the previous section, so I’ll wrap it up in short.

Using this tool, you can find local backlink opportunities, content ideas, user experience ideas, and more.

Next is the Social Media Toolkit.

To improve your local SEO strategy, you can utilize Semrush’s Social Media Toolkit to do the following:

  • Post on multiple platforms at once
  • Manage Facebook and Instagram ads
  • Track your competitors
  • Schedule posts for later
  • Analyze your performance

That’s about it.

I’m not discussing all the finer details in this section.

Quick Verdict:

When it comes to local SEO, Semrush does have a lot of useful features.

However, you may need to learn some advanced functionalities to figure out how to use Semrush to boost local SEO.

Rank Tracking

What editing is to writing, rank tracking is to SEO.

It helps you polish your efforts so that the final outcome is better.

Since it is a crucial part of any SEO strategy, a lot is at stake while judging any tool on this parameter.

Semrush has three main tools for rank tracking:

  • Position Tracking
  • Sensor
  • Ranks

We've already covered Position Tracking earlier.

Want a refresher?

I don’t want to get repetitive, so we’ll just skim over its functionality.

It enables you to search site rankings over a period of time, compare it to your competitors’ rankings, and discover new opportunities to get ranked on the search engine results page (SERP).

The best part is that the tool provides daily data updates for all its users by default.

You can try it yourself here.

The next tool for rank tracking is the Semrush Sensor.

It’s quite unique because it helps you keep track of any kind of volatility that might affect your ranking.

It is designed in such a way that you can monitor changes daily in your rankings in any selected category.

It gauges the overall SERP volatility in the range of 1-10.

The higher the volatility score is, the more chances that Google introduced an algorithm update.

Here is a sample of the report:

SERP volatility

Using the Sensor tool, you can compare your project to other competitors.

Additionally, you also get the latest news and insights on Google’s algorithm. Test out this Semrush yourself now!

Next, let’s talk about the Ranks tool.

This functionality on Semrush is unlike any other SEO tool.

It shows a proprietary score that will let you find the web domains that get the most traffic from organic search.

How do you use it?

You get to compare the online performance of keywords, websites, and even traffic costs.

It can be a treasure trove of knowledge for research, prospecting, and competitive analysis.

Ranks tool

Through the Semrush Rank tool, you can find the top 100 popular sites.

But how is the Semrush Rank calculated?

It is calculated based on the traffic estimate that any domain gets. For this, Semrush considers Google’s first ten results pages.

Quick Verdict:

Semrush has great options for rank tracking even for advanced SEO webmasters.

I would definitely recommend this Semrush toolkit.

Link Building

Link building and prospecting are the backbones of any SEO strategy.

If you want to excel in these areas, you need the right tools at your disposal.

So what does Semrush offer?

It has five main tools for link building:

  • Backlink Analytics
  • Backlink Audit
  • Backlink Gap
  • Bulk Backlink Analysis
  • Link Building Tool

As you can see, Semrush has a lot of tools for link building.

If you check out their website, you’ll know that they claim to have the biggest and the fastest backlink database in the market.

That sets the expectations up high.

In this section, let’s check if it measures up. I’ll try to skim over the key features of each tool.

First up is the Backlink Analytics tool.

A quick view of this Semrush tool will tell you that it will help you fully streamline your backlink analysis workflow.

Backlink Analytics tool

It’s a very dynamic tool that offers many functionalities.

I’m going to sum it up for you here.

Using this tool, you can:

  • Sort backlinks by attribute and type
  • Identify different backlinks [Text, form, frame, or image]
  • Check all inbound links, subdomains, linking domains, URLs, and their categories
  • Inspect any referring domain’s location and authority
  • Check how many backlinks come from a single domain and different countries

In a nutshell, it gives you everything you need to check your backlink portfolio.

Once you’ve worked on your link-building strategy, the next step for any SEO master is to keep tabs on how it is performing.

For that, the Backlink Audit tool is useful.

Semrush’s Backlink Audit tool uses over 50 toxicity markers to find broken links that may have a negative impact on the site rankings.

Backlink Audit tool

When you find any potentially harmful backlinks, you can create a list of all the links that you’d like to remove.

Then you can reach out to the domain owner to get them removed.

But what if you don’t get any response? You can collect all the backlinks into a .txt file and send it to the Google Disavow tool directly.

It’s a convenient way to clean up your backlink portfolio.

Give it a try now!

Want to avoid any potentially toxic links?

You can run regular recrawls and keep an eye out for the toxic ones shown in the report.

Google Disavow tool directly

Overall, Semrush gives you all the tools to maintain a spic and span backlink portfolio.

What's more, it even has a tool that can help you discover new backlinking opportunities. It’s called the Backlink Gap tool.

It’s a quick way to find out the best backlink opportunities that your competitors are making the most out of.

Backlink Gap tool

By assessing their profile, you can discover backlinks that you may be missing.

It’s great.

But what if you want to scale up your efforts and go for a bulk backlink analysis?

For that, the next Semrush tool is useful.

The Bulk Backlink Analysis Tool lets you check and compare the overall backlink profiles of more than 200 websites.

All you need to do is enter the URLs in the tool and click on “Compare.”

Bulk Backlink Analysis tool

The results will help you find your best competitors.

Why don’t you give it a try yourself? Register on Semrush for free here.

If you want to take the analysis one step further, you could also sort these backlinks by type. For instance, you could group all image-based backlinks together.

This kind of arrangement is a clever way to get insights into your competitors’ strategies.

Last on the list of Semrush’s link-building toolkit is the Link Building Tool.

From discovering new link-building opportunities to developing an outreach strategy, the Link Building Tool covers it all.

It’s meant to be an all-inclusive solution for your link-building needs.

The dashboard gives you a quick overview of all your link-building activities.

Link Building Tool

If you dig in deeper, you can also identify new prospects, set up an email outreach campaign, and monitor your overall progress.

Overall, it has everything you need.

Quick Verdict::

From a full-fledged tool focused on link building to others dedicated to gap analysis, Semrush has a lot to offer.

Try its different link-building tools and take your pick.

Would definitely recommend it!

Competitor SEO Analysis

Keeping a keen eye on what your competitors are doing is a necessary skill to succeed at SEO.

For competitor analysis, Semrush has five main toolkits:

  • Organic Research
  • Backlink Analytics
  • Backlink Gap
  • Keyword Gap
  • My Reports

In this Semrush review, we’ve already talked about the first four toolkits.

I’m going to skip over it and move directly to the last tool called, “My Reports.”

Again, this one is a treat for those who love visuals. Through this tool, you get to create custom reports from scratch.

Don’t just read my review. Try designing a report yourself with this Semrush tool now.

Their drag-and-drop report builder makes the process simple for even those who aren’t adept at designing.

You can also white-label them by integrating your brand information.

Once you are done designing it, you can automate the process of sending it out as well. In this tool, you can automate your report sending schedule on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis.

Drag-and-drop report builder

Quick Verdict:

Semrush has a suite of complementary tools for competitor analysis.

However, using all of them together will require good knowledge of the platform.

Semrush Content and PR Media Monitoring Toolkit Review

SEO isn’t just about numbers or data.

If you want to build a successful SEO strategy, you have to focus on content as well.

From how you write your website content to how you distribute it, it’s all important for your SEO strategy.

In this section of the review, let’s take a look at what Semrush offers as a part of its Content toolkit.

Content Marketing

Most of the tools covered by the Semrush Content toolkit are relevant for content marketing.

(Check out the entire Semrush toolkit yourself. Register now!)

These include:

  • Topic Research
  • Marketing Calendar
  • SEO Content Template
  • SEO Writing Assistant
  • Brand Monitoring
  • Post Tracking
  • Content Audit

Let’s get an overview of each one of them.

In this review, I’m going to try to squeeze as much information as possible without writing big blocks of text.

First up is Topic Research.

This tool is designed to help you discover content ideas that can resonate with your target audience.

Using this tool, you can find popular headlines, topics, and questions which can help you create an effective editorial plan.

Try researching a topic on Semrush yourself!

Topic Research

My favorite part of this tool is that you can also perform content gap analysis.

It enables you to discover topics that your competitors may be ranking for. Based on that, you can fill in gaps in your own content marketing plan.

Next, let’s talk about the Marketing Calendar.

This tool is designed to ensure that all your team members can collaborate on your marketing campaigns and check the overall progress easily.

Think of it as a project management tool that is integrated with your marketing campaigns.

Register for it now. It’s absolutely free!

Marketing Calendar

In this tool, you can also get data from Google Analytics and use UTM tags. This way, you will be able to track site traffic by bounce rate, sessions, goal completion rate, and other metrics.

If you have a large team of social media professionals working along with SEO executives for your marketing campaigns, this tool can be very helpful.

Next, let’s talk about SEO Content Template on Semrush.

It is a tool that gives you a custom SEO template for your content based on your chosen keyword and location.

Additionally, the tool also suggests the optimal content length and recommended readability. You also get a list of semantically related keywords and relevant domains to get backlinks from.

SEO Content Template

It even reminds you of basic SEO tips.

It’s fun to play around with. Register for Semrush and check it out yourself!

It offers suggestions on how you can tweak your content to make it more SEO-friendly. Check out the screenshot below:

SEO Content Template 2

If you aren’t sure of how to use a particular keyword, you can check how your competitors use it as well.

Similar to this tool is Semrush’s SEO Writing Assistant.

Using this tool, you can improve your content’s readability and optimize your title.

Another important feature of this tool is that it checks your content for plagiarism and tone of voice.

SEO Writing Assistant

If you’ve overused certain keywords, the tool also gives you a warning signal.

All of these recommendations together can make a big difference in making your content more SEO-friendly.

What are you waiting for?

Next on the list is Brand Monitoring.

Just as the name suggests, this tool helps you track your brand mentions, identify sentiment, measure reach, and more.

Brand Monitoring

Apart from this, it has a lot of other functionalities as well.

These include:

  • Ability to identify brand mentions that don’t have backlinks
  • Find influencers
  • Identify top blogs in your niche
  • Track mention trends
  • Find competitors’ mentions

In my opinion, this tool is at the intersection of SEO, content marketing, and social media marketing.

Post Tracking is another similar tool that covers all these areas.

It lets you measure the performance of your posts that are published on external resources.

Using it, you can track backlinks, referral traffic, social media engagement, and daily keyword rankings.

Post Tracking

Lastly, Semrush’s Content Audit tool is designed to help you spot your poorly performing content.

The best part is you can define the scope of your content audit based on your requirements.

All the metrics from Google Search Console and Google Analytics are also updated in real-time.

If you want to rewrite or update a post, you can also create detailed task descriptions from within the platform.

Content Creation and Distribution

When it comes to content creation and distribution, Semrush has three main tools:

  • Topic Research
  • Content Marketplace
  • Social Media Poster

In this review, we’ve covered the first tool.

Let’s straightaway move to the next one.

If you want to publish high-quality content on your website but don’t have the resources for content creation, the Content Marketplace is for you.

It connects you to professional writers who can deliver posts based on the topics you mention. Plus, they will optimize your content so that it is SEO-friendly.

Content Marketplace

Think of it as a platform to outsource your content needs.

I haven’t used it, so I am not going to give you a review of it.

But you can check it on the Semrush website yourself!

Content Optimization

For content optimization, Semrush has two main tools:

  • SEO Content Template
  • SEO Writing Assistant

We’ve already covered these two topics before in the previous section of the review.

So, let’s move on.

Content Marketing Analytics

Even for Content Marketing Analytics, we’ve already covered the relevant sections previously in this post.

The main tools for it are:

  • Content Audit
  • Post Tracking

You can try these tools by registering for Semrush here.

Quick Verdict:

As a tool that is heavily SEO-focused, Semrush does have extensive features for content marketing as well.

But is it worth it?

I would recommend you to use it in conjunction with the SEO toolkit.

Detailed Review of Semrush’s Pricing Plans

Previously in this review, we talked about the different pricing plans available on Semrush. However, we just didn’t get into the specifics.

In this section of Semrush review, I want to discuss the details of each pricing plan.

Pro Plan

Pro Plan

A quick review of the Pro Plan will make it clear that this plan is basic, yet covers everything a beginner might need.

However, you should note that it has no features related to content marketing.

But what’s the price?

$119.95 per month.

Sounds expensive?

Compared to other SEO tools out there, the price tag may seem a tad bit on the higher side.

But to be fair, it does offer more features compared to other similar tools too.

What Does this Semrush Plan Include?

Some of the key features included in the Pro Plan are:

  • 10,000 results per report
  • 3,000 reports per day
  • 250 keyword metrics updates per month
